Creative testing that doesn’t burn money: the hook × format × proof matrix (with the decision spreadsheet)
Juliana Carvalho · 2026-10-07
80% of the results come from the creative. 80% of creative tests are done wrong: people change 3 things at once and don’t know what worked.
THE MATRIX (test 1 variable at a time)
- HOOK (first 3 seconds / first line): direct pain (“Swollen legs at the end of the day?”), curiosity (“What your pharmacist doesn’t tell you about…”), proof (“3.412 women in Portugal already…”), authority (“Doctor explains…”), contrast (“Before I… now…”).
- FORMAT: UGC talking to camera · product demo · before/after · animated text over b-roll · image carousel · static image with a headline.
- PROOF: testimonial · number · certificate/seal · comparison · live demo.
Protocol
- Lock the format and proof. Test 4 hooks. 48h, 20 USD each. Keep the best hook.
- Lock the winning hook. Test 3 formats. 48h.
- Lock the hook + format. Test 3 types of proof.
- Final winner = your baseline. Now you can test copy/caption/CTA variations.
METRICS BY STAGE (don’t look only at CPA during testing)
- Hook rate (3s views / impressions): < 25% = weak hook, kill it.
- Hold rate (15s / 3s): < 40% = the promise isn’t being delivered in the first few seconds.
- Link CTR: < 0,8% = the creative isn’t driving action; > 2% with a high CPA = landing page/offer.
- CPM: if your creative has a CPM 40% above your account average, Meta is penalizing you for low quality/negative engagement.
How many creatives per week
- Up to 100 USD/day: 3 new/week. • 100–1.000: 5–8. • Above that: 10+. Creatives have a half-life of 2–4 weeks with cold audiences.
Hook sources that work
- Competitors’ ad comments (open them via FreeSpy → Ad Library → comments): real objections and questions become your next hooks.
- 1-star reviews of competitor products on Amazon: the pain point nobody has solved.
- Winning ad copy in your ad spy tool: filter for “strong hook” and 30+ days live.
