Scaling on Meta: the 4-phase matrix (testing → validation → vertical scaling → horizontal scaling) with the numbers for each phase
Leonardo Barbosa · 2026-10-07
Scaling means changing gears. What works at 50 USD/day breaks at 500. Here’s the matrix:
PHASE 1 — TESTING (until you find 1 creative that converts)
- 1 ABO campaign, 1 ad set per angle (3–4 angles), 2–3 creatives per ad set. 20–30 USD/day per ad set.
- Broad audience (country + age + gender only if the product requires it). Use interests only if the country is small.
- Make a decision after 72h or after spending 3× your target CPA with no sale. Kill the ad set, not the campaign.
- Guiding metric: CPA. Warning metrics: CTR < 1% (creative), high CPC + high CTR (landing page), high ATC with no purchase (checkout/price).
PHASE 2 — VALIDATION (1–3 winning creatives)
- New CBO campaign, 1 broad ad set, winners only. Budget = 5× your target CPA.
- Leave it alone for 5 days. If CPA is ≤ target on 4 out of 5 days, it’s validated.
- Start making variations of the winner: same hook, different first 3 seconds; same video, different caption; same copy, 4:5 vs 9:16 format.
PHASE 3 — VERTICAL SCALING (same campaign, more money)
- +20% every 48h if CPA is ≤ target. Never +50% all at once (it resets the learning phase).
- Practical ceiling: when CPA rises 25% for 2 days in a row, you’ve hit the ceiling for that setup. Stop increasing; move to horizontal scaling.
- Automatic rule: pause the ad set if CPA > 1.5× target with spend > 2× target that day.
PHASE 4 — HORIZONTAL SCALING (more setups)
- Duplicate the validated campaign in: another account under the same BM, another BM, another country (same language first: ES→MX, PT→BR, DE→AT).
- Audiences: 1–3% buyer lookalike (once you have 500+), 7-day ATC retargeting with a different offer.
- Each copy starts at 50% of the original budget and follows the +20%/48h rule.
- Creatives: 3–5 new ones every week. Healthy rate: 1 in 5 becomes a winner. If it’s less than that, the brief is the problem.
What the ad spy tool champions have in common
Check Top Scaled → “champion” profile: the same creative running for 60–200 days, 10–50 active copies (duplicates) at the same time, and few text variations. They scale the SAME winner horizontally instead of constantly reinventing the wheel. Use 🚀 Test to copy the setup.
Pitfalls
- Advantage+ Shopping helps with vertical scaling, but hurts testing (it mixes everything together).
- Change the creative inside a winning ad set = new ad set. Duplicate instead of editing.
- Scaling on Friday: CPMs are different on the weekend; compare Monday to Monday.
