Cloaker: a risk decision, not a magic tool

When not to use one

Cloakers aren’t the solution to every traffic problem. If you have a legitimate product and aren’t violating any policies, using a cloaker could increase your risk of getting your ad accounts suspended. Also, if your strategy already includes good targeting and optimized creatives, a cloaker may be unnecessary and could even hurt your reputation.

What it detects

Platforms like Meta and Google have advanced algorithms that identify cloaking. They analyze click behavior, traffic patterns, and page quality. If your site shows users something different from what it actually delivers, the chances of getting suspended go up. Signs of cloaking include high bounce rates and low engagement.

A real white page

A common practice is to create white pages that don’t contain misleading content but offer little information. However, this isn’t a real solution. White pages can be easily identified, and the lack of relevant content can lead to a poor user experience. Ideally, the page should provide clear and useful information, even if you’re using cloaking.

Maintenance cost

The cost of maintaining a cloaker can be high. Besides the investment in technology, you should factor in maintenance, testing, and ongoing updates to avoid detection. The cost can range from R$ 500 to R$ 2.000 per month, depending on how complex the setup is. That doesn’t include potential costs from suspended accounts and lost revenue.

Alternatives

  1. Creative Optimization: Focus on ads that speak directly to your audience and test different formats.
  2. Advanced Targeting: Use the platforms’ targeting tools to reach the right audience and avoid the need for cloaking.
  3. Relevant Landing Pages: Create sales pages that are informative and deliver real value to users. This increases conversion rates and reduces the risk of suspension.
  4. A/B Testing: Test different approaches to figure out what works best without resorting to risky methods.

Using cloakers is a decision that involves significant risks and operating costs. Consider whether you can optimize your current strategy more effectively and safely.
