Automated Rules That Save Money at Night

Pause an ad set with spend > 2x target CPA and no purchases
If an ad set is spending more than twice your target CPA and hasn’t generated any conversions, it’s time to pause it. This rule keeps you from continuing to spend on ineffective ads. To implement it, set up an automation that automatically pauses the ad set when this condition is met. Check daily to make sure the rule is working correctly.
Increase 15% when CPA < 70% of target for 2 days
If an ad set’s CPA is below 70% of the target for two consecutive days, increase the budget by 15%. This strategy lets you quickly scale ads that are performing well. Set up an automation to make this change automatically, but always check that performance stays stable after the increase.
Alert for anomalous CPM
Set up an alert for when CPM (Cost per Thousand Impressions) exceeds a certain threshold, which you can define based on your industry’s historical average. This helps you identify delivery issues or intense competition that could hurt your campaigns. Use automation to receive notifications so you can make quick decisions.
Checking frequency and attribution window
Set how often you check your campaigns. Ideally, you should monitor them at least once a day, but if possible, set up alerts every four hours. Use an attribution window that makes sense for your product; for example, if purchases tend to be impulsive, a 7-day window may be ideal. A window that’s too long can distort performance data.
What not to automate
Avoid automating critical decisions involving creative and targeting analysis. Evaluating new creatives and running A/B tests require a human eye to spot nuances a machine might miss. Also, don’t automate bid adjustments in campaigns whose objectives change frequently. Those decisions should be made based on deeper analysis and market context.
These automated rules can help optimize your ad spend, especially at night, when active monitoring is more difficult.
