The complete math behind a COD order: from click to money in your account

To understand the math behind an order placed via COD (Cash on Delivery), it’s essential to analyze each step of the process. Here are the key points:

1. CPA (Cost per Acquisition)

CPA is the cost of acquiring a customer who actually makes a purchase. To calculate it, use this formula:

CPA = (Total Campaign Cost) / (Number of Sales)

For example, if you spent R$ 1.000,00 on ads and got 50 sales, your CPA would be R$ 20,00. That means, on average, you spent R$ 20,00 for each sale.

2. confirmation

After an order is placed, confirmation is crucial. In a COD scenario, confirmation happens when the customer completes the purchase and the store verifies the details. It’s important to track the conversion rate from confirmed orders to placed orders. To do that, calculate:

Confirmation Rate = (Confirmed Orders) / (Placed Orders)

If you had 100 placed orders and 80 were confirmed, your confirmation rate is 80%.

3. delivery

Delivery is a sensitive step in the COD process. Delivery time and service quality directly impact customer satisfaction. It’s important to monitor the successful delivery rate:

Delivery Rate = (Delivered Orders) / (Confirmed Orders)

If you delivered 70 out of 80 confirmed orders, your delivery rate is 87,5%.

4. returns

Returns can directly impact your margin. Monitor the return rate:

Return Rate = (Returned Orders) / (Delivered Orders)

If you had 5 returns out of 70 deliveries, your return rate is 7,14%. This is an important indicator for evaluating product quality and customer satisfaction.

5. payout and final margin

After accounting for all the steps, it’s time to calculate your payout and final margin. The payout is the amount you actually receive after costs and returns. To do that, use:

Payout = (Total Sales Value) - (Total Cost of Sales) - (Returns)

If the total sales value was R$ 10.000,00, the total cost (including CPA) was R$ 6.000,00, and you had R$ 1.000,00 in returns:

Payout = R$ 10.000,00 - R$ 6.000,00 - R$ 1.000,00 = R$ 3.000,00.

The final margin as a percentage can be calculated as:

Final Margin (%) = (Payout / Total Sales Value) x 100

In this example, the final margin would be 30%.

By understanding each of these steps, you can optimize your campaigns and improve your COD sales results.
