YouTube Ads for direct response: the 30-second structure that beats the skip and the setup that doesn’t waste impressions

YouTube is the cheapest channel for reach and the most expensive one to get wrong. The video does 90% of the work.
VIDEO STRUCTURE (skippable in-stream)
0–5 s: visual hook + a line that names the pain point or breaks a pattern. No logo. The “skip” button shows up at 5 s — you need to earn the 6th second.
5–15 s: unique mechanism (“it’s not X, it’s Y because…”). Show the product in use.
15–25 s: proof (quick testimonial, number, before/after).
25–30 s: offer + verbal CTA + on-screen CTA. Repeat the CTA at the end if the video is long (60–90 s converts better for nutra; 30 s for electronics).
- Always use captions (40% watch with the sound off). 16:9 for in-stream, 9:16 for Shorts (make both).
Setup
- Video campaign → “Drive conversions” (not “views”). Bidding: target CPA after 30 conversions; before that, maximize conversions.
- Targeting: custom audiences based on keywords searched on Google (real intent) + in-market audiences + remarketing to people who watched 50% of the video. Avoid “interests/affinity” — it burns money.
- Exclude: kids’ channels, mobile games, “made for kids” content, apps. Update the channel exclusion list every week using the “Where ads showed” report.
- Devices: start with mobile + desktop; exclude connected TV (no clicks).
- Frequency: 3 per user per week. Any higher and CPM goes up while conversions drop.
Discover/demand gen
For visual products (home, beauty), Demand Gen with 1:1 and 4:5 images in Discover/Gmail feeds brings a CPA similar to Meta, with a new audience. Test with 50 €/day and 5 images.
Metrics
- View rate > 30% = good hook. • CTR > 0.8% = clear offer. • CPV 0.02–0.06 €. • Earned views: content that drives subscribers is a sign of a good video.
Where to find hooks
The winning videos in the ad spy tool (filter “video only,” live for 30+ days, score ≥ 60) have scripts read by Muse: open the ad → 🧠 block. Copy the structure, not the video.
